SCOTLAND is part of the United Kingdom. However it has its own parliament, legal system, education system and even its international football team. Its capital is Edinburgh, the population of Scotland isn’t very big – it is only 5,200,000.
Here are some facts from the Scottish history. Before England and Scotland were not united, there were many wars between them. In 1603 the Scottish king, James 6, became King of England and a century later Scotland and England were united.
SCOTLAND is famous for its own culture. There are some traditional holidays, for example Burns Night on the 25 of January, Edinburgh Festival which is celebrated in August, Hogmanay on the 31 of December and others. At Burns Night Scottish people celebrate the birthday of Robert Burns – Scotland’s national poet, and Scottish people have a big dinner every year to celebrate his birthday. The dinner begins with the sound of bagpipes and the “haggis” – a traditional dish, a kind of sausage made from organs of cheep. Everyone sings songs and reads poems by ‘Robbie Buns’. Edinburgh Festival is in August. It’s for theatre opera, classical mimic, concerts, dance performance and films. Then, there is the military Tattoo, a parade, held in Edinburgh Castle. Scotland celebrates Hogmanay, New Year, with bagpipe music and dancing in the street. At midnight, there are fireworks, and everyone sings ’Auld lang syne’. Around the New Year period, Scottish families go ’first footing’ visiting friends and relations to continue the celebrations.
I think is a very interesting place to go and see!
